PCC Mission Philosophy

Purpose

The purpose of having a mission philosophy is to present in clear statements the scriptural mandates for the involvement of Perinton Community Church in missions.  This mandate has been called the Great Commission and appears in five different places in scripture with a different emphasis each time.

Matthew 28:19-20
"All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations..."

Mark 16:16
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; but whoever does not will be condemned."

Luke 24:46-47
"This is what is written.  The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day; and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

John 20:21
"Jesus said to them, 'Peace be with you.  As the father sent me, even so I am sending you."

Acts 1:8
"You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

What is Mission?

A)  The word "Mission"
The word mission is a Latin word (mitto or mittere) meaning to send.  The mission of the Church is the equipping and sending of God's people into the world, everywhere Christ is not known and God is not worshiped.

B)  The word "Evangelism"
The Greek work for good news or gospel is euangelion.  While Paul wasn't the first to use the word euangelion, there is good reason to credit Paul with establishing Euangelion as the New Testament's prime word to describe our mission.

C)  God's Calling
God's purpose is to make Himself known to all people and to establish a relationship with them.  All Christians are commanded to share the Good News of Christ.  God, however, calls from among us certain people to carry out specific full time ministries according to their gifts.  Career missionaries are those people called by God to be His messengers, witnesses and spokesman to people of different geographic areas and/or cultures.

D)  Our Response

PCC is all about Worshiping Jesus and Sharing His Love therefore:

      1.  Each one of us in the PCC family should realize that we ourselves are in mission where God has placed us.  The Church is preparing and equipping each of us to lead others to Christ.  C.L.A.S.S. 401 is one means to this end.

      2.  PCC Mission will display a partnership between being the merciful church to our own neighbors, and planting the merciful church abroad.

      3.  Each person in the PCC family should realize that we have the privilege and responsibility to sacrificially, tangibly partner with the career missionaries that are also part of our church family.

      4.  We seek balance in supporting both missions at home and abroad and will always endeavor to never let one be diluted at the expense of the other.

PCC Mission Policy

Purpose

The purpose of having a mission policy is to help PCC apply the scriptural teachings concerning the mandate of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20) in a consistent manner.  This policy is based on the unchanging commission of Christ to make disciples from every people group and seeing churches established and built up among them.

Our Covenant

-We will be a people engaged in individual and corporate witness by our service and words, in our community and around the world (Acts 1:8).

-We will show our love for our neighbor by using our time and resources to meet the needs of the poor, the hurt, the widow and the orphan (Matthew 25:31-46).

-We will seek to relieve suffering resulting from disasters and injustice as the Lord enables us (Micah 6:8, Isaiah 56:1).

-We will diligently co-labor with the church world-wide to make disciples among all nations (Ephesians 4:11-12) by...

  1. going forth with the gospel (Matthew 9:36-38)
  2. drawing new Christians into membership of the family of God in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 4:19, Acts 2:42-47), and
  3. teaching those given to us to obey the commands of Jesus (Colossians 1:28-29).
Our Principles

We understand that God's primary model for mission is the local church.  The goal of PCC mission is to participate in God's work to gather believers to Himself.  This work of evangelism, teaching and caring is based on the following principles:

-The saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is available to all people groups.

-The local church is responsible for recognizing God's calling of individuals into mission.

-By the grace of God, we are responsible for enabling, equipping, and sending those called to mission.

-Engagement in mission is necessary for individuals and the local church body to grow to maturity.

-The Lord uses the diversity of each person and their gifts to reach out to all people.

-Wherever the people of PCC apply their gifts, skills, time and resources in ministry outside our walls, they are an extension of PCC in mission.

Our Commitment

We at PCC commit our lives and resources to:

-Seeking to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

-Immersing in continual and fervent prayer.

-Being a part of the total church program in worship, education, and fellowship through a variety of interactions with our missionaries and participation in their work.

-Encouraging individuals to seek the Lord's will in innovative and proactive mission opportunities.

-Offering programs of involvement for those desiring to utilize their time and resources in mission.

-Encouraging those in mission by direct involvement in both their ministry and personal lives as appropriate.

-Protecting the security of those who work in sensitive areas.

The Perinton Community Church Mission Team in cooperation with the church elders has developed this PCC Mission Philosophy and Policy.  The complete philosophy and policy is available upon request.  The above is a portion of that philosophy and policy.
